  Yellowstone N.P.

Winter

Yellowstone in winter was a particularly productive trip

with a relatively high number of photos.  This portfolio

is intended to blend scenic  with artistic images to give

the viewer a  better sense of the immense beauty of

 Yellowstone.

Due to the inclement weather conditions, your

pre-selection of clothing is particularly important.

You don't want to take so much as to become immobile

and you want to take enough so you don't freeze.

  Day 2

    LAMAR VALLEY

The amount of wildlife in Yellowstone has been reduced with the introduction of wolves.  The elk population has literally collapsed.  However, wildlife is becoming more abundant again as the wolf population has stabilized at about 70 individuals, down from 200.

  Day 4

    TO WEST YELLOWSTONE

Besides the amazing beauty of the landscape, the most common reason for visiting Yellowstone is to photograph its thermal features.  Norris Geyer Basin is arguably one of the best areas to view this natural phenomena.

  Day 5

    NORRIS

The American Bison seem to be holding their own against the wolves. The population seems healthy and well fed due to the light snow fall and easy access to grass under the thin layer of snow. There was also an abundance of younger bison.

  Day 6

    IDAHO

The trip included landing in Montana, cruising through Wyoming in a Snow Coach, and riding snow mobile trails in Idaho.  The Gallatin Targhee National Forest, with its snow covered trees and peaks, was just as beautiful as Yellowstone, just in a different way.
