This Clematis bloom
resulted from the rigorous pruning of an old vine to produce a really
extraordinary flower. I once learned that old wood will not
bloom. Is this philosophical or what?
I took at least 5 rolls
of film over a two week period to get just one image that came closest to
representing what I had visualized. First, I had to get the light
right, one hour after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset. I wanted to
stay away from the warm tones produced by sunrise and sunset. Next,
the wind was a major problem, especially with a 200 mm lens since the
flower was large and even the slightest breeze moved the bloom.
Finally, using a spot
meter, I exposed for the bloom itself and hoped that the lighting
differential to the background was sufficiently different to produce a
working image.
