Photographing surfers at a major surfing competition in Huntington Beach can take a little strategy. The beach is teaming with schools of photographers from the various surfing magazines and related media. Most are loaded to the gills with big Canon glass and tend to shoot in large groups from high on the beach.
I tend to take a different approach by scurrying south down the beach near the water so I have the sun at my back and the water at my feet. If the surfer cuts right on the wave, I have a chance. If he cuts left, I'm left in the spray. However, when successful, I'm able to get angles and composition that is a little different than the other photographers on the beach.
