Taking successful photographs of sports (such as basketball) in a high school gym can be a challenge.  Typically, there are few windows to let daylight in and there is an assortment of artificial lights, many of which may have been broken for years.

Film:

Fuji negative 1600

Shoot at:

1200 ASA

Lens:

Wide range tele zoom  (80-400)

Optional:

Image stabilization or vibration reduction

Filtration:

None - use negative film and correct color in printing.

If you are lucky enough, and the above formula works most of the time at your local gym, then you can burn some serious quantities of film trying to get that once-in-a-life-time shot of you kid.
