Even during the good old days of 35mm film, the most popular image sizes were 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20.  This is too boxy for me and wasted a lot negative.  Today, with "wide screen" displays, I'm really liking the wider formats.  Unfortunately, most images, mats, and frames are still proportioned to the old favorites. See the images below to get an idea of the different ASPECT RATIOS.

I can easily create wider proportioned images but finding precut mats that are 10x14 or wider is very difficult, especially if you have no intention of cutting your mats.  The solution?  I did find a source for these mats but the opening is exactly 14" long and so is the image.  I have solved the problem using 11x17 paper.  I had no clue why a paper manufacturer would make this size but now I know.  It's for digital proportioned images to 10x14 and slightly longer. 

     Digital DX Frame (1.4x)   (9.4x14)

            This is the original aspect ratio of a 1.4X digital sensor. No option on precut mats.

                   10 x 14  (same aspect as 5x7)   (my preference)

                           This is the aspect ratio I prefer but difficult to find mats with proper opening.

                       4 x 3rds format     (same as old TVs)        

                           This is a new format for digital sensors. I still like 10x14 better.

                       11 x 14           

                           This is the most available aspect ratio but is too square for many images.

                  8 x 10  (same proportion as 16x20)

                           This is also a popular aspect ratio but also squarish.
