I happened to be in Monterey CA to photograph at a local ranch when I heard there was a severe storm developing at sea further north. Storms hitting the coastline equal great wave action, especially against the rocky shoreline of Monterey. I only had time to visit the shoreline 4 hours before sunset, which is not the best light, but I was really satisfied with the results. I suspect that I could not have captured the image with a film camera due to film latitude limitations.
Generally there are a number of hikers, joggers, and photographers wandering the shoreline of Monterey. Not at this time. It was eerie being the only person wandering around for miles. Very serene and and almost a meditational experience.
All of the images were taken with a 12 megapixel digital SLR with 28-70 mm F2.8 zoom lens. A 1 stop soft graduated neutral density filter was used to balance the background light..
