Least Tern |

Equipped with a 300-800 zoom, I headed to Oceanside to photograph the Gallaz Pro surf contest only to be confronted with hazy skies and lousy surf. No sense burning film. Instead, I decided to drive thru Newport Back Bay and found this tern doing 360's over a little pond. I quickly grabbed the 300-800 and tripod from the back seat of my car and started shooting. One minute later the tern was gone.
It's hard to emphasize enough the importance of equipment that is easy to set up and quick to shoot. I always leave my camera on aperture priority with matrix metering. I'm probably one of only a few nature photographers that uses a spring loaded quick release for attaching the lens to the camera body.
