I recently discovered that February is a great time to photograph both outdoor cymbidiums and green house orchids in Southern California. I was able to find productive green houses at the Sherman Library and Gardens in Newport Beach and the L.A. Arboretum in Arcadia.
Finding desirable light is the biggest challenge in a green house. Using flash will generally black out the background. Heavily filtered lighting will produce images that are too soft. I depend on light rays streaking through glass windows and ceilings highlighting details of individual orchid flowers.
The photograph was taken with a 200mm F4 lens, on a CF tripod with ISO 400 negative film.
