The image above was taken at the
U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach during the round of
64. There were approximately 50,000 spectators on the beach
and I had a great position. However, once the finals
started, at least 25,000 beach goers headed into the shore
break making it impossible to shoot any longer. I
remember one photographer had his own ladder from which he
proceeded to continue shooting.
I prefer to shoot from a low angle
to accentuate the size of the surf because Huntington Beach is
not known for its large surf in the middle of the summer. Next
year, though, I'll remember to bring a ladder for the finals.
The image above was captured on a
D2H with 300-800 zoom mounted on a gimbal head and aluminum
tripod. I generally shoot from a little 3 leg seat since
I may be in spot for over 8 hours.
