Reflection

Statistically, photographing Yosemite at the end of January should produce some great storm shots.  Instead, I got blue skies in 10  degree F. While visually stunning, the limited exposure range of film makes it impossible to capture the light and dark areas of a scene in one image, particularly in the middle of the perfect day. The human eyes see 16 shades between black and white, color negative film sees only 5.    This is why scenic photographers shoot mostly in the morning and afternoon.

The image was taken toward afternoon with a 3 stop soft graduated neutral density filter to help balance the exposure latitude. Note how the red bush almost produces the feeling that the photograph was taken in autumn.  The photograph was taken with a N90 with 17-35 mm AF-S zoom.
