The late January weather in Yosemite was bright and beyond the tonal range of photographic film for most of a 5 day trip. However, for this early afternoon shot, the light was just right and I wasn't worried about the dark background due to the composition of the image. I exposed a number of vertical and horizontal frames of this scene which was particularly beautiful. This is an example of the importance of light in making the photograph.
The image was taken with a 17-35 mm lens with 3 stop soft graduated neutral density filter. Mounted on a carbon fiber tripod, I generally shoot this type of image at F11 and let matrix metering determine the shutter speed.
