Deer in Forest

I have never intentionally gone on a photo outing to photograph deer. They just happen to show up whenever I'm at one of several different locations. The draught in Southern California in 2002 may have helped.
My main hiking lens is a 80-400 VR. The reason is that once you spot wildlife, you're lucky to have more than a few seconds to photograph it. If you find a nice scene, you will likely have several minutes in which to replace the VR lens with a wide angle. Also, you simply won't have enough time to use a tripod with wildlife (and wildlife hate tripods).
The image was taken hand held at 1/30th of a second at F7.1.
