We've heard a lot about the US Budget Deficit in the last several years.  Unfortunately, you are are not hearing about the "total" budget deficit as many items such at the War in Iraq are not included in the budget deficit number.  (not unlike some corporations off balance sheet items e.g. Enron.)

Instead of scrolling through the entire budget to try and find these hidden items, it is easier to just add up the "National Debt" of the country.  Deduct last year from this year and you now have the "true" budget deficit.

$ Trillion % increase GDP % of GDP
 2008 9.7     37.9
2007
 2006
 2005
 2004
 2003
 2002
2001
 2000 5.7     35.1%

Note that the the National Debt increased by an average 8.7% per year between 2000 and 2008.
